Resolution 293-1985
Mayor Wilhelmina Harvey
RESOLUTION NO. 293 · 1985
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE DISAPPROVAL OF THE
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY
OF THE DESIGNATION OF THAT PORTION OF U. S. 1
FROM THE DADE/MONROE COUNTY LINE TO ROCKLAND
KEY FOR USE BY TANDEM TRAILERS.
WHEREAS, Alterman Transport Lines, Inc., has requested that
the Florida Department of Transportation, under F.S. 316.515,
designate the portion of U. S. 1 from the Monroe/Dade County line
to the Company's terminal on Rockland Key available to tandem
trailer trucks; and
WHEREAS, such tandem trucks consist of two twenty-eight foot
trailers and cab; and
WHEREAS, the portion of U. S. 1 in Monroe County, except for
those portions in Key Largo and Marathon, is a largely rural or
semi-rural highway; and
WHEREAS, such portion of U. S. 1 is often crowded with
tourists unfamiliar with the area, cars or trucks pulling boats
and large motor homes, all of which already create difficult
traffic safety problems which have lead to the highway having a
fatality rate 80% above the average for other rural and
semi-rural highways in the State; and
WHEREAS, tandem trailer trucks would only serve to exacer-
bate the above noted existing problem; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
Section 1. In light of the detrimental effect upon the
safety of the public traversing that portion of U. S. 1 from the
Dade/Monroe County line to Rockland Key, if tandem trailer trucks
were to be allowed, Monroe County hereby requests that tandem
trailer trucks not be permitted upon said road.
Passed and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the 18th day of October, A.D. 1985.
