RESOLUTION NO. 339-1985
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE ARTIFICIAL REEF
PROJECT SPONSORED BY THE KEYS ASSOCIATION OF
DIVE OPERATORS OF MONROE COUNTY; REQUESTING
THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TO PERMIT
THE USE OF BOATING IMPROVEMENT TRUST FUNDS ON
PROJECTS OUTSIDE STATE WATERS TO ASSIST THE
ARTIFICIAL REEF PROJECT DESCRIBED HEREIN.
WHEREAS, the Keys Association of Dive Operators has engaged
in a program to establish artificial reefs in various areas off
the Florida Keys, and
WHEREAS, a committee has been established within the Keys
Association of Dive Operators known as the Artificial Reef
Committee, and
WHEREAS, the aforesaid Committee has requested the Monroe
County Commission to lend its support and efforts to the Artifi-
cial Reef Program Project, and
WHEREAS, artificial reef programs have been very important
to Monroe County by bringing tourist to our County and aiding the
economy, and
WHEREAS, the Boating Improvement Trust Fund created and used
for boating uses in Monroe County and administered by the Ex-
tension Director has monies available that could be used, if
released and agreed to by the Department of Natural Resources,
for the artificial projects discussed in this resolution, now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. That the aforesaid Board does pledge its support to the
efforts of the Florida Keys Association of Dive Operators in the
establishing of the various artificial reefs now contemplated and
planned.
2. That the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County
does instruct Jeff Fisher, Extension Director of Monroe County,
to work in concert with the Artificial Reef Committee aforesaid
in the development of the Reef Program for the waters of Monroe
County and to report to the Board, from time to time, as to the
Artificial Reef Committee's activities.
Further, that the
aforesaid Jeff Fisher shall recommend to the Board of County
Commissioners, when and if it is indicated, what the Board can do
to further the progress of the aforesaid Artificial Reef Commit-
tee.
3. That the Department of Natural Resources of the State
of Florida be requested to permit and allow the use of funds from
the Boating Improvement Trust Fund created and administered by
the Extension Director of Monroe County for boating projects
outside State waters as an assistance to the artificial reef
program discussed herein above and that the Director of the
Department of Natural Resources is hereby requested to so
provide.
4. That a certified copy of this resolution by forwarded
to the Department of Natural Resources, Attention: Dr. Elton
Gissendanner, Director, by the Clerk of this Board.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the '-t7 day of December, A. D. 1985.
