RESOLUTION NO. 172-1984
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE STATE OF FLORIDA
TO CLOSE ALL STATE OFFICES IN MONROE COUNTY
AT DECLARATION OF HURRICANE WATCH BY THE
NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER FOR ANY PORTION OF
MONROE COUNTY.
WHEREAS, by its location in a hurricane vulnerable area of
the United States and its limited evacuation route in the event
of a hurricane, Monroe County faces a critical need to plan to
reduce the loss of life and damage to property associated with
hurricanes, and
WHEREAS, Monroe County, which in large part encompasses a
group of islands known as the Florida Keys, is subject to
flooding and wave damage from high-wind, heavy rain storms, and
WHEREAS, hurricanes have a potentially devastating impact
upon Monroe County in that storm tides are the cause of the
majority of hurricane related deaths, and
WHEREAS, the closing of all State offices in Monroe County
would facilitate swift community response for the protection of
lives and property during the approach of a storm classified as a
hurricane, and same would be necessary to augment County policy
of closing government offices, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. That the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, request that the Governor, pursuant to Chapter 252,
