Resolution 172-1984 Office of ~~.i1 Defense RESOLUTION NO. 172-1984 A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO CLOSE ALL STATE OFFICES IN MONROE COUNTY AT DECLARATION OF HURRICANE WATCH BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER FOR ANY PORTION OF MONROE COUNTY. WHEREAS, by its location in a hurricane vulnerable area of the United States and its limited evacuation route in the event of a hurricane, Monroe County faces a critical need to plan to reduce the loss of life and damage to property associated with hurricanes, and WHEREAS, Monroe County, which in large part encompasses a group of islands known as the Florida Keys, is subject to flooding and wave damage from high-wind, heavy rain storms, and WHEREAS, hurricanes have a potentially devastating impact upon Monroe County in that storm tides are the cause of the majority of hurricane related deaths, and WHEREAS, the closing of all State offices in Monroe County would facilitate swift community response for the protection of lives and property during the approach of a storm classified as a hurricane, and same would be necessary to augment County policy of closing government offices, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: 1. That the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, request that the Governor, pursuant to Chapter 252, Florida Statutes, authorize and direct the closing of all state offices in Monroe County when a Hurricane Watch is declared by the National Hurricane Center for any portion of Monroe County. 2.
