RESOLUTION NO. 259-1984
A RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING MEL AND
DOLORES FISHER AND TREASURE SALVORS, INC.
WHEREAS, since their arrival in the Florida Keys in 1970,
Mel and Dolores Fisher have fully, unfalteringly, and without
reservation devoted their resources, their energies, and their
lives to the recovery of treasure from ancient Spanish galleons
sunk in the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, and
WHEREAS, in furtherance of this monumental undertaking, Mel
and Dolores Fisher have founded and established Treasure Salvors,
Inc., and
WHEREAS, the persistent and diligent efforts of Me1 and
Dolores Fisher and of Treasure Salvors, Inc. have resulted in the
discovery of numerous, invaluable treasures which had remained
unsa1vaged and lost for hundreds of years and have brought about
the recovery of such unique and priceless items from the depths
of the ocean waters, and
WHEREAS, the people involved and associated with Treasure
Salvors, Inc. have also established the Mel Fisher Maritime
Heritage Society, a non-profit educational organization committed
to the development of an extensive research library through the
acquisition and compilation of local and Spanish documents, and
WHEREAS, through the enduring and resolute dedication of Mel
and Dolores Fisher and Treasure Salvors, Inc. articles of price-
less historical value have been made available to present day
persons for view and for study and have been preserved for the
enjoyment and edification of future generations, and
WHEREAS, Mel and Dolores Fisher and Treasure Salvors, Inc.
have thus provided educational, historical and cultural benefits
and opportunities to persons in the Florida Keys, and
WHEREAS, these activities, libraries and exhibits
established by Mel and Dolores Fisher and by Treasure Salvors,
Inc. have attracted thousands of visitors and scholars from
throughout the world to the Florida Keys, and
WHEREAS, these entities and activities provide employment
for a sizable number of local residents, both directly and
indirectly, and
WHEREAS, Monroe County deems it to be both fitting and
proper that Me1 and Dolores Fisher and Treasure Salvors, Inc.
should be recognized for their contributions to the enhancement
of tourism, to the economic well being of the Florida Keys, and
to the educational, historical and cultural resources of all
people, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that Mel and Dolores Fisher and Treasure
Salvors, Inc. be and the same are hereby commended and honored
for the bounteous and opulent treasure which their presence and
their activities have brought to the Florida Keys not only in the
form of tangible riches, gold, silver, and precious jewels, but
also in the form of intangible benefits, educational, historical,
and cultural resources and opportunities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Board believes "Today is
the day" such recognition should be accorded.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the 7th day of September, A.D. 1984.
