Resolution 173-1993 Monroe County Commission RESOLUTION NO. 173 -1993 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMIS- SIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THE SOUTH FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION REGARDING THE ECOLOGICAL COLLAPSE OF THE FLORIDA BAY. WHEREAS, the Florida Bay is undergoing critical ecological deterioration; and WHEREAS, the collapse of the Florida Bay is the result of cutting off more than 90% of the freshwater that historically flowed into the Bay from the Everglades; and WHEREAS, the marine life in the Florida Bay are suffering maj or declines due to the cut-off of freshwater and resulting -." WHEREAS, the tourist economy and the ..., o 1,=' :z --- ::0 r~ ::;;t: 0' ,,,~ commero~l C") '~C.: threa~ed t9 - , changes in the Bay; and ecological collapse of the Bay; and --<( rT'1 ::z a f!:l;hin8 N '-r; bey' th~ :::g '-1 N 0 i.iI :-:0 prevGusly' industry of the Florida Keys are seriously WHEREAS, the Board of County Commis s ioner s"> adopted Resolution No. 84-1993 requesting the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to hold public hearings to allow the citizens and taxpayers of the Florida Keys to express their concerns on this issue; and WHEREAS, the public hearings were held and the Board of County Commissioners hereby respectfully requests that the SFWMD take immediate action on the recommendations suggested; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: Section 1. The Board here requests the SFWMD to take immediate action to restore the quantity and quality of freshwater flows into the Florida Bay, by increasing the flow of water through Taylor Slough, one of the Florida Bay's main sources of freshwater from the mainland, and by decreasing the amount of freshwater wasted in the C-111 canal, which pumps the precious water out to the Atlantic Ocean. Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to Governor Lawton Chiles and to the Governing Board of the South Florida Water Management District.
