RESOLUTION NO.328 -1981
WHEREAS, the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of
Monroe County depends upon a strong local health system supported
by an adequate number of well-trained nurses, and
WHEREAS, a recent survey of hospitals in South Florida indicated
that there are approximately 1,200 nursing vacancies in Dade and
Monroe hospitals, and
WHEREAS, Monroe County has been experiencing a loss of
numerous nurses from the community for positions in other areas
further exascerbating the shortage in Monroe County, and
WHEREAS, the Florida International university has been in the
process of developing a baccalaureate nursing program to
commence in January of 1982, and
WHEREAS, any delay in the start of this proposed program will
eliminate the possibility of a timely solution to South Florida's
nursing shortage, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA, that they do hereby express their support of
the Florida International University Baccalau~eate Program, and
calls upon the Florida Board of Regents, and in particular,
Chancellor Barbara Newell to take whatever steps are necessary
to assure the provision of this badly needed program.
