Resolution 088-1965RESOLUTION NO. 88 -1965 WHEREAS, as a result of the recent hurricane "Betsy", considerable damage was done to the shoulders and roadbed of U. S. Highway No. I (State Road No. 5) in Monroe County, Florida, and the Board of County Commissioners of said County, acting as the Civil Defense Council, im- mediately contracted to make the necessary repairs to said highway and fill the eroded areas on the shoulders of said highway, to prevent further damage to property, and to protect the lives of the citizens of said County, since if said highway had not been immediately repaired, further erosion could have occurred, and said highway being the only road in and out of said County, and WHEREAS, the State Road Department was not able to make the necessary repairs immediately and fill in said eroded areas, it became necessary for said Board of County Commissioners to cause such repairs to be made, and WHEREAS, the Federal Government will not reimburse said Board for sums expended on said highway, same being a federal highway and not eligible to receive such funds, and WHEREAS, said Board of County Commissioners has expended the sum of $65, 879. 10 in making such necessary repairs and filling in said ero- sion, in order to safeguard the property and lives of the citizens of said Coun- ty and keep said highway open, and WHEREAS, said County is a tourist area, and it is necessary to keep said highway in good repair in order to make same safe and attractive to any tourists coming into said County, and WHEREAS, it was the responsibility of the State Road Department to make said repairs to said highway, same being a primary State and Federal highway, and not the responsibility of the Board of County Commis- sioners, which acted in the best interests of the State in making such neces- sary repairs immediately, now, therefore, . v ® • BE IT RESOLVED BY THE.. BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the ,State Road. D.epartm.ent be, and, it is hereby re:que.s.ted. to reimburse the County of Monroe, State of, Florida. in the .amount of. $6.5, 879. 10, which said amount was expended. by said Board - in making the n.eces.s.ary repairs to. U. S. Highway No. I (,State Road. No. 5), .same being a primary State and Federal highway, as..a result of the damage caused by hurricane "B.ets.y", such repairs being necessary to prevent fur- ther damage and/or erosion to said highway. .BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY .SAID BOARD. that the Clerk. -of said.
