RESOLUTION NO. 65-1966
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida is vitally interested in all matters pertaining to the civic and econo-
mic improvement of the City of Key West and its future industrial develop-
ment, and
WHEREAS, the fishing industry of Key West is one of the major econo-
mic mainstays of this city, providing employment and income to many of its
citizens through fishing and through the supplemental shore establishments
which support the fishing effort, and
WHEREAS, the U. S. Army Engineers have favorably reported to the
Congress a project for the construction of a breakwater to protect Key West
Harbor, said report dated July 1, 1962, and contained in Senate Document
No. 106, of the Second Session of the 97th Congress, and
WHEREAS, our esteemed Congressman, Honorable Dante B. Fascell,
has recently accomplished the inclusion of an appropriation of $600, 000. 00
in the bill to be reported by the House of Representatives for the construction
of the Key West Harbor Breakwater, and
WHEREAS, the building of this breakwater will aid greatly in protecting
boats and shore installations in Key West Harbor from destructive northerly
winds, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA that it does hereby petition the Honorable
Spessard L. Holland and George A. Smathers, our United States Senators, to
do everything in their power to obtain Senate approval of funds to construct
the Key West Harbor Breakwater, as now approved by the U. S. Army En-
gineers and now included in the House Appropriations Bill which goes to the
Senate for consideration.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY SAID BOARD that the thanks and grate-
ful appreciation of the citizens of Monroe County, Florida, expressed through
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY SAID BOARD that certified copies of
this Resolution shall be furnished to Senator Holland, Senator Smathers,
Congressman Fascell and Honorable Randolph Hodges, Director of Conser-
vation of the State of Florida.
