Resolution 283-1993 M~nroe County Commission RESOLUTION NO. 283 -1993 '.0 '7:1 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, APPEALING TO THE GOVERNOR AND CABINET TO EXPEDITE DOT FIBER-OPTIC CABLE PERMITTING FOR GOVERNMENT INFORMATION TELEVISION STATION FOR HURRICANE-AWARENESS AND EVACUATION TO EN~URE PUBLIC SAFETY. ~ 'c ("'-I =WHEREAS I the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has ~essed~trong interest in and support of a government i~~o~tion' t~evision station for the Keys and for the services i~:wi~ provide...especially those deemed crucial during the criti~l stages of hurricane preparedness and evacuation; and en ~WHEREAS, the mechanics necessary to initiate Keyswide broadcast capability and the heightened hurricane-awareness such capability can provide require completion of a fiber-optic tele- communications link throughout the county; and WHEREAS, the planning, placement and execution of a fiber-optic link to connect the Florida Keys one to another and ~o mainland South Florida require permission and support from the Florida Department of Transportation; and WHEREAS, said Department of Transportation permission and support as yet do not appear forthcoming; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: Section 1. The Board hereby formally requests Governor Chiles and his cabinet to help mitigate whatever reluctance the Florida Department of Transportation has toward granting such fiber-optic installation in the Florida Keys. Section 2. The Board further requests the Governor strongly u~ge Florida Department of Transportation officials to lift the prohibition of cable-placement by TCI, Inc., so that the completion of a fiber-optic network, and the vital information it will transmit can proceed without delay or interruption. Section 3. The Board sincerely wishes that with help from our state's chief executive office that the importance of such a vital telecommunications link can be communicated to the Florida Department of Transportation, that they allow the installation of fiber-optic cable in Monroe County so that there will be a continuous update for hurricane monitoring, tracking and evacuation information, which can be broadcast in order to ensure the safety of those who visit and reside in the Florida Keys.
