RESOLUTION NO. 39 -1968
WHEREAS, the U. S. Navy has announced that it is ceasing its shipl s
repair work at the U. S. Naval Base in Key West, Florida, and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida is aware of the economic importance of said work to the welfare of
the citizens of said County, and
WHEREAS, said action by the U. S. Navy will result in the dismissal
of numerous employees at said Naval Base, which will have serious effects
upon the economic welfare of Monroe County, Florida, and
WHEREAS, said Board feels that the work being done at said Naval
Base will have to be done at other naval installations throughout the United
States, and desires to protest the discontinuance of said work at the Naval
Base in Key West, Florida, and request the appropriate officials to re-
consider said action, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that said Board hereby requests the
appropriate officials of the U. S. Navy to reconsider the discontinuing of
its ship's repair work at the U. S. Naval Base in Key West, Florida, be-
cause of the serious effects which the discharging of numerous personnel
now employed at said Naval Base will have upon the economic welfare of
Monroe County, Florida.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY SAID BOARD that the U. S. Congres-
sional Members representing Monroe County, Florida be, and they are here-
by urged to intervene and request the U. S. Navy to reconsider said action,
and to maintain said ship's repair work at the U. S. Naval Base in Key West,
Florida.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY SAID BOARD that the Clerk of said
Board be, and he is hereby authorized to forward certified copies of this
Resolution to the Secretary of the Navy, Senator Spessard L. Holland, Sena-
tor George A. Smathers, Representative Dante B. Fascell, and the Com-
manding Officer of the U. S. Naval Base at Key West, Florida, for appro-
priate action.
