RESOLUTION NO. 281 -1979
RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE MONROE COUNTY
LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION TO ASSIST MONROE
COUNTY IN OBTAINING NECESSARY STATE OF
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL
REGULATION PERMIT, D.E.R. FILE NO.
44-20174, FOR CONSTRUCTION OF THE BOOT
KEY PROJECT IN MARATHON, FLORIDA.
WHEREAS, Monroe County has, since 1950, been pursuing
the development of the Boot Key Project located in Marathon,
Florida, to provide for deepening and widening of a channel
from a point in Hawk Channel South of Knight Key to a pro-
posed turning basin approximately 750 feet easterly and
west of Boot Key Bridge to provide for the health, safety
and welfare of the citizens of Monroe County, its visitors,
and to provide a safe harbor for marine activities, and
WHEREAS, in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers
Monroe County has applied for the necessary permits from the
State of Florida Department of Environmental Regulation to
perform the work, and
WHEREAS, Monroe County has been advised by the Army
Corps of Engineers that funding for said project is now
available such that the construction of the project can be
started during the Fiscal Year 1979-80, and
WHEREAS, if said construction is not started as stated,
the funding will be lost which basically would mean the total
loss of the project forever, and
WHEREAS, Monroe County has applied for the necessary
permit from the Department of Environmental Regulation and
the Department of Environmental Regulation has assigned
D.E.R. File No. 44-20174 to said permit application, now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:

1. That the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe
County, Florida, does hereby request the Monroe County
Legislative Delegation and all the State of Florida officials
to assist Monroe County in expediting and obtaining the
necessary permit from the State of Florida Department of
Environmental Regulation at the earliest possible date in
order to assure that the Boot Key Project is completed and
not lost due to any delay in obtaining the permit from the
Department of Environmental Regulation.
2. Further, that the Monroe County Legislative Dele-
gation is hereby requested to take any and all steps necessary
to contact those officials in the Department of Environmental
Regulation which could assist in expediting said permit
application, D.E.R. File No. 44-20174, to assure the immediate
processing and approval of the Boot Key Project.
3. The Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, does hereby request the State of Florida Department
of Environmental Regulation to assist in expediting Monroe
County's permit application, D.E.R. File No. 44-20174, for
the Boot Key Project.
4. That the Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to
forward certified copies of this resolution to the Monroe
County Legislative Delegation, the U. S. Army Corps of
Engineers, the Department of Environmental Regulation, and
other State of Florida officials.
