RESOLUTION # 308-1978
WHEREAS, the BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS of MONROE County, Florida,
has received an application from HOWARD W. POST to construct a concrete slab
seawall ( with dead men) along 180' of southwestern face of Small Island located
121 offshore. Boulder rip-rap to be placed at toe of seawall. Seawall to be
supported by eXisting shelf. Natural shoreline, opposite to proposed seawall,
is established and mature red mangroves. Depth of channel between varies from
11 . 5 1 to 7 I .
Applicant proposes to replace open circulation channel (81 x 12') with two(2)
48" aluminum culverts, enclosed with compacted fill, and use boulder rip-rap to
stabilize this fill.
During construction of seawall, access to island for heavy construction vehicles
will be provided by temporary earthen causeway. This causeway will be completely
removed following construction.
The general area along this shore has a history of attempted development. Adjacent
property (JHT) has a long, deep 121 + canal. North of this, is a piece of property
with two long canals.
The construction of the canal, channel and associated spoil island were certified
in September, 1970 (DF# 44-100),
The area where the seawall is to be installed is atop a narrow shelf, which has
scattered brown and red algae attached to some of the small stones.
The bottom in the circulation channel is devoid of vegetation.
As there is not established vegetation, the long and short impact of this project
will be minimal and
WHEREAS, this project has been reviewed and it has been found that it will not
cause any substantial damage, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, by the BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS of MONROE County,
Florida, that the BOARD hereby gives its approval for the above described
construction.
