Resolution 474-1993 Monroe County Commission RESOLUTION NO. 474-1993 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, URGING THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO REFORM THE WORKERS' COMPENSATION SYSTEM. WHEREAS, there is now pending before the Legislature of the State of Florida, proposals for real and meaningful reform of the workers' compensation system; and WHEREAS, Monroe County, Florida, is a self-insured employer z ~- 0' , \,0 Tl providing benefits under the Florida Workers' Compansiitioll'J Ac~ ::D ,_ :r :--r"J .~-'1 2: 0 o -c:::: and ,.-, c:., ~ WHEREAS, Monroe County does expend millions ~~40lla~s f6r _' u ''', construction of capital improvement projects which l;:equ~e t~e .". W 'n A ,) expenditure of hundreds of thousands of dollars of workers compensation premiums at considerable burden to Monroe County taxpayers; and WHEREAS, the costs of the present workers' compensation system has become an unacceptable financial burden on the resources of government in this community; and WHEREAS, Monroe County and its taxpayers can no longer afford the burden of workers' compensation insurance without contemplating the erosion of wages and fringe benefits to employees and the deterioration of public services; and WHEREAS, real reform of the workers' compensation system offers the opportunity to reduce litigation, to improve industrial safety and to effect cost containment over the escalating expense of medical care; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to encourage and support the Legislature of the State of Florida in its efforts to enact real Workers' Compensation Reform in the interest of the employees and taxpayers of the County; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: Section 1. The Board hereby urges the Legislature of the State of Florida to, with all deliberate speed, meaningful reform the Florida Workers' Compensation System. Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to forward certified copies of this Resolution to Governor Lawton Chiles, Senator Darryl Jones and Representative Ron Saunders.
