RESOLUTION NO.138- 1980
RESOLUTION REQUESTING STATE AND FEDERAL
ASSISTANCE DUE TO ECONOMIC IMPACT CAUSED
BY THE CUBAN REFUGEE SEALIFT.
WHEREAS, Key West's leading business 1S tourism,
and,
WHEREAS, Key West is experiencing a serious
decline in it's tourism industry as a direct result of the
Cuban Refugee Flight/Sealift and its subsequent coverage by
national and international news media; and,
WHEREAS, a business task force has determined that
tourist dollars into Key West's economy have dropped over fifty
per cent (50%) in comparison to a two (2) week period one (1)
year ago; and,
WHEREAS, the President of the United States has
declared Monroe County 1n a state of emergency;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. That this Commission does request the Governor
of the State of Florida to request Federal assistance from any
and all State and Federal agencies 1n all available forms, such
as SBA low interest loans, to be made available to the tourist
related businesses so adversely affected, and,
2. That State contingency funds be released to help
pay for a major advertising campaign emphasizing that Key West
and Monroe County is still a desirable place to vacation.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting held on the
3rd day of June, 1980.
