RESOLUTION NO. 150 -1980
RESOLUTION REQUESTING ASSISTANCE FROM THE
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO IMMEDI-
ATELY RESOLVE RELEASE OF THE SEIZED VESSELS
USED IN THE CUBAN SEALIFT.
WHEREAS, the United States stands for human rights, and
WHEREAS, based upon the great heritage of Americanism
and the due process requirement of our great Constitution,
immediate action should be taken to assure that such ideals
are fully carried forth, and
WHEREAS, the President of the United States did pre
viously advise nationally that the United States would open
its arms to the Cuban refugees fleeing oppression, and
WHEREAS, the continued seizure of the fishing vessels
used during the Cuban Sealift is not in accord with our
system of justice, and
WHEREAS, such seIzure has and does continue to create
immediate economic disaster to Monroe County and other areas
of the United States, and
WHEREAS, such seizure has had a total rippling effect
In regards to the economy In that other people in the community
and in the United States are being adversely affected econom-
ically as shrimp headers no longer have shrimp to head,
packing houses no longer have shrimp to pack, diesel mechanics
no longer have boats to repair, etc., and
WHEREAS, there are now many thousands of people other
than the owners or captains of the shrimp boats who are
being adversely affected through layoffs and permanent
closing of businesses, and
WHEREAS, the release of said boats will not adversely
affect any of the pending alleged violations of the U. S.
Code and would not detrimentally affect the rights of the
United States or any of its citizens, now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. That the President of the United States 1S hereby
requested to grant an immediate audience with the officials
of the Board, fishing industry, the City of Key West and
other business leaders of the community in order to assure
the immediate establishment of a procedure and release of
the seized boats.
2. That this Board does also request the total support
of its Federal delegation in obtaining an immediate audience
with the President.
3. That the Board does hereby make it known that it
supports the petition of the owners and captains of the com-
mercial vessels in obtaining the release of said vessels.
4. Further, that failure to provide said audience on
an immediate basis will be a total gross miscarriage of
justice to all the citizens of Monroe County and other
citizens of the United States and not in accordance with our
great American heritage.
Passed and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners
of Monroe County, Florida at a special meeting of said Board
held on the 26th day of June, 1980.
