Resolution 219-1980 RESOLUTION NO. 219_ 1980 RESOLUTION OPPOSING DESIGNATION OF KEY WEST AND MONROE COUNTY AS A TEMPORARY AND/OR PERMANENT CUBAN REFUGEE CENTER. WHEREAS, Tens of Thousands of Dollars in goods and services, have been provided by the various public agencies in Monroe County, and, WHEREAS, attempts at getting even partial payments from the various Federal agencies involved in the crisis have been met with apathy and indifference on the part of the Federal agencies involved, and, WHEREAS, there exists presently problems with regard to water and other services at the Truman Annex as well as other areas of Monroe County, and, WHEREAS, Key West and the Florida Keys have suffered great and direct adverse economic impact from the Cuban refugee situation since its inception, and, WHEREAS, the geographic location of the Truman Annex is such as to aggravate transportation problems which have been experienced in the past and certainly are to be experienced in the future, and, WHEREAS, Monroe County is subjected to hurricanes at this time and the facilities at the Truman Annex are not in a condition to properly house the refugees during such a disaster, and, WHEREAS, the proposed movements of the Cuban refugees "Tent City" to the Florida Keys and/or Key West is nCrfi'l1 the best interest , , :...... ,,~ -.. of the citizens of Monroe County, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: 1. That Monroe County is strongly opposed to the movement of the Cuban refugees to Key West and/or Monroe County for any type of containment or refugee center, as such action would not be in the best interests of the health, safety, and welfare of all concerned. / Page 1 of 2 Pages 3cs 2. That Monroe County does hereby request all appropriate officials, including its Federal legislative delegation, to take all immediate and responsible steps to assure that the proposed movement does not take effect. 3. That the Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners 1S hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the President of the United States, the Federal legislative delegation in and for the State of Florida, and such other appropriate governmental officials. Passed and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a special meeting held on the 29th day of August, 1980.
