RESOLUTION NOTIFYING D.O.T. THAT MONROE COUNTY
IS INALTERABLY OPPOSED TO THE ABANDONMENT, OR
Y AN.FUTURE PROPOSED ABANDONMENT BY THEM OF THE.
POLICY OF REPLACING FISHING CATWALKS AND BOAT -
RAMPS WHEN CONSTRUCTING A NEW BRIDGE.
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Board of County
Commissioners that the Florida Department of Transportation, one of
the largest providers of recreational facilities in the State had
proposed to abandon its policy of replacing fishing catwalks and
boatramps when a new bridge is constructed, and
WHEREAS,.this would be detrimental to fishermen and boaters
and adverse to the economic -interests of Floridians in providing
recreational facilities for sportsmen,°many of whom are tourists
attracted to Florida., and
WHEREAS, there are 37 bridges in Monroe County scheduled
for replacement by the Department - many of said existing bridges
have such.catwalks and many of the plans for said replacement
bridges contain provision for construction_of fishing catwalks, and
WHEREAS, Monroe County annually attracts millions of tourists
who avail themselves of the fishing catwalks and numerous boatramps
located here and return year after year to use same, now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Florida Department of Transportation
be and they are hereby notified that the Board of County Commissioners
of Monroe County, Florida are unanimously and inalterably opposed to
the abandonment by the Department or any future proposal to abandon
its existing policy of replacing.fishing catwalks and boatramps
when constructing new bridges in.that such an abandonment would be
contrary to the public policy of the State of Florida and extremely
detrimental to the tourist economy'of the State as well as to the
interest of fishermen and boaters.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk be and he is hereby
authorized and directed to forward a true copy of this resolution
to the office of the Governor.of.the State of Florida, to each
member of the Florida Cabinet, to Monroe County's Legislative
Delegation in the Florida Legislature and to the Secretary of the
State of Florida Department of Transportation and to the State
Association of County Commissioners and the Legislative Committee
of the Florida -Recreation and Park Association with request that
each.do all in their authority to'insure that said policy of
replacement of catwalks and boatramps never be abandoned and
that each introduce or support legislation to prohibit the promul-
gation of any administrative rule which would abandon said replace-
ment policy.
