RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE METHODS, PURPOSES
AND GOALS OF THE 1976 KISSIMMEE RIVER RESTORATION
ACT
WHEREAS, the restoration of a meandering river with seasonally
flooded marshes in the valley of the lower Kissimmee River will:
conserve fresh water'supplies both surface and ground;
improve the quality of the water in the River and in
Lake Okeechobee;,
greatly increase, highly -valued native fish and wildlife
populations;.
convert waste nutrient materials to.peat and muck soils
and to wetland plants of great value to ranchers for
winter forage;
conserve fossil fuel supplies by utilizing the natural energies
of the river system to accomplish these purposes; and
provide a resource having great, recreational, cultural,
historic and.esthetic values to present and future generations
of Floridians and their visitors, now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Commission goes on record endorsing the
methods, purposes and goals -of the 1976. Kissimmee River Restoration Act -
Florida Statutes 373.1.965 - and supports the prompt restoration of the River
in order to achieve the stated objectives of the Act. The Commission further
congratulates the legislative sponsors and. supporters of the Act for providing
a creative and precedent setting response to major problems of South Florida.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE BOARD that a copy of this
Resolution be forwarded to the members of the Monroe County legislative
delegation in the Florida Legislature.
