RESOLUTION NO. 30 -1968
SECONDAR Y ROADS
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County
recognizes the necessity for four-laning U. S. Highway No. 1 within the
boundarie s of Monroe County, and
WHEREAS, it is recognized that the cost of four-laning of the entire
length of the road in the Keys is more than can be financed at one time in
the foreseeable future, and
WHEREAS, it is deemed expedient that a start be made in this overall
project, and
WHEREAS, the State Road Department has pledged to the Monroe
County Commission that they will place under contract a four-laning project
of U. S. Highway No. 1 within Monroe County having a construction cost in
excess of One Million Dollars each year for the next five years, provided
that Monroe County will pledge $250,000.00 of its secondary road funds to
the State Road Department for use in these four-laning projects, and
WHEREAS, the County Commission desires to implement this project
immediately, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that Monroe County pledges to budget
$250,000.00 of its secondary gas monies to be matched by at least $750,000.00
by the State Road Department, said monies to be used by the State Road De-
partment for four-laning U. S. Highway No. 1 within Monroe County each
year for the next five years.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State Road Department is hereby
authorized and requested to acquire all the necessary rights-of-way for the
future four-laning of U. S. Highway No. 1 from the Dade County line to Key
West out of funds presently available in the 7.9 million dollar Secondary
Road Bond Issue, and the State Road Department is hereby authorized and
requested to proceed with any necessary condemnation actions in order to
acquire the necessary rights-of-way.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State Road Department is request-
ed to begin the four-laning in the following sequence of projects:
1. Tavernier North to Lake Surprise.
2. Indian Key Channel North to Whale Harbor Bridge
including Islamorada municipal construction.
3. Municipal construction through Marathon (Seven
Mile Bridge North to Vaca Cut).
4. Whale Harbor Bridge North to Tavernier.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Road Department is requested to
take bids on these projects in July of each year, beginning in July, 1969, and
the Department is hereby requested to consider the employment of the County's
Consulting Engineers to provide the necessary surveys and engineering in
order to expedite these projects.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY SAID BOARD that the Clerk of said
Board be, and he is hereby authorized to forward certified copies of this
Resolution to the State Road Department for appropriate action.
