Resolution 134-1975 7 RESOLUTION NO~34 -1975 WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) proposes to build a new animal import center on Fleming Key in Monroe County, Florida, near the City of Key West, Florida, and WHEREAS, the proposed Fleming Key animal import center will be developed as a special off-shore facility through which live- stock will be safely imported into the United States from countries which the USDA considers infected with Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Rinderpest, or certain other dis~es exotic to this country, and WHEREAS, Fleming Key's isolation from livestock-producing areas, coupled with stringent testing, would provide the safeguards necessary to prevent introduction of these diseases into the United States, and WHEREAS, cattlemen have long sought such a facility to improve United States breeding programs and thereby produce more beef more efficiently for the consumers' table, and WHEREAS, neither Foot and Mouth Disease (F}ID) nor Rinderpest is a threat to human health, and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, feels that the establishment of said facility on Fleming Key will be of economic benefit to the citizens of Monroe County, Florida, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that it hereby endorses and recommends that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) establish and build a new animal import center on Fleming Key, Monroe County, Florida for the reasons hereinabove set forth. ~ BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY SAID BOARD that certified copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Director of Administrative Services Division, APHIS, Room 5148, South Building, USDA, Washington, D.C. 20250.
