Meeting Date: December 15. 2004 Division: County Administrator Department: Fire Rescue Bulk Item: Yes No X AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Presentation and approval of Resolution of Appreciation recognizing exceptional efforts and service to the citizens of Charlotte County Florida by Monroe County Fire Rescue Task Force Team performing emergency duty during the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. ITEM BACKGROUND: On Friday, August 13,2004 Hurricane Charley made landfall on the West Coast of Florida. Charlotte County was most severely affected, leaving an aftermath of widespread property destruction and thousands of people displaced, overwhelmed, and in need. Monroe County Fire Rescue responded immediately by organizing and deploying a Task Force Team consisting of various fire rescue agencies from Monroe County at 2400 hours that very night, Friday, August 13, 2004, setting into motion an incredible coordination of personnel providing emergency services to the affected areas. The team subsequently performed various tasks to the benefit of the citizens of Charlotte County. PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: On October 20, 2004, a Resolution of Appreciation was approved recognizing the efforts of the Monroe County Department of Health and the Miami-Dade County Department of Health stafffor their efforts at the Fill shelter during Hurricane Ivan for their care of the Special Needs and Medical Management clients. On November 17, 2004, A Resolution of Appreciation was approved recognizing the efforts of all Monroe County personnel and the various agency and municipal staff performing emergency duty during the 2004 hurricane season. TOTAL COST: -0- BUDGETED: Yes No SOURCE OF FUNDS: N/ A REVENUE PRODUCING: Yes AMOUNTPERMONTH_ Year No X DIVISION DIRECTOR APPROVAL: N/ A Risk Management N/ A APPROVED BY: County Atty Yes FIRE CHIEF APPROVAL: DOCUMENTATION: Included X To Follow Not Required DISPOSITION: AGENDA ITEM # j5~ Revised 1/03 RESOLUTION No. 2004 A RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION OF THE COUNTY COMMISSION OF MONROE COUNTY RECOGNIZING EXCEPTIONAL EFFORTS AND SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF CHARLOTrE COUNTY FLORIDA BY MONROE COUNTY FIRE RESCUE TASK FORCE TEAM PERFORMING EMERGENCY DUTY DURING THE AFTERMAm OF HURRICANE CHARLEY WHEREAS, On Friday, August 13, 2004 Hunicane Charley made landfall on the West Coast of Florida; WHEREAS, Charlotte County was most severely affected, leaving an aftermath of widespread property destruction and thousands of people displaced, overwhelmed, and in need~ WHEREAS, Monroe County Fire Rescue responded i~iate1y by organizil1g and deploying a Task Force Team consisting ofvarious fire rescue agencies from Monroe County at 2400 hours that very night, Friday, August 13, 2004, setting into motion an iocred11>le coordination of personnel providing emergency services to the affected areas~ WHEREAS, When the team arrived, the members went right into action with the evacuation of the Port Charlotte Hospital, working under adverse conditions, transporting many sick, injured and serious ill patients to hospitals located in neighboring counties~ WHEREAS, Once the evacuation of the hospital was completed, the team tmned its attentioo to the hardest hit areas of Charlotte County and conducted a door to door search for injured, sick or trapped citizens~ WHEREAS, The team rescued an elderly woman trapped in her trailer, attended to her medical needs and then transported her to the nearest open medical facility~ WHEREAS, The team, over a three day period and 00 duty for five days, responded to dozens of medical emergencies, handled each one and cared for the victims of the disaster; WHEREAS, The team searched over 6 square miles of area and through hundreds of homes and businesses for people in need~ WHEREAS, The team opened roads, removed hazards to homes and provided comfort for the citizens of Charlotte County; WHEREAS, The team, along with members of Charlotte County Fire Rescue, responded to a serious hazardous material incident and worked throughout the night resulting in a positive outcome with the incident being mitigated~ WHEREAS, This resolution seeks to recognize and thank the individuals of the Monroe County Fire Rescue Task Force Team for their dedication and hard work assisting the citizens of Charlotte County Florida during the aftermath of Hurricane Cbarley, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA: Section 1. Hereby extends the sincere appreciation and gratitude of the Board of Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida to all the Monroe County Fire Rescue personnel who performed emergency service after Hurricane Charley in Charlotte County, referenced herein by role or function for their valiant and selfless service to the special needs of the citizens of Charlotte ComIty. Section 2. Hereby adopts this resolution of appreciation as a permanent record of the high esteem and respect of the Board for all persons in Fire Rescue that stepped up in a time of state emergency to assist the citizens of Charlotte County.
