AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to enter into negotiations to purchase property in Rockland
Key as described on the attached, for a Public Works facility and record storage facility.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The City of Key West desires to purchase the Public Service Building
property on Stock Island in order to expand the adjoining botanical garden. Therefore, alternate sites
for a fire station, record storage facility and Public Works facility are needed. Several properties from
Stock Island through Rockland Key were reviewed.
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: On April 17, 2002 the Board directed staff to obtain
appraisals of the property and pursue the acquisition of alternative sites in the event the City made a
purchase offer. On March 19,2003 the Board authorized staff to submit the "willing seller letter"
required by the city's grant application. On December 15, 2004 the Board directed the County
Administrator to proceed with negotiations keeping the option for full purchase as requested by the
Botanical Gardens or a reasonable division of the property to meet multiple needs.
