II ~~ RESOLUTION NO. 071 -1991 '\) c. , '~ j' A ('RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS PRIDE IN PRESIDENT q~PRG~~.BUSH, SECRETARY OF STATE JAMES BAKER, Mtt1TAKY STRATEGISTS, AND THE TROOPS IN THE SUSPENSION OF THE WAR. v WHEREAS, we take much pride in our President, the Honorable George Bush; Secretary of State, James Baker; military strategists; the troops; especially those who died for us and among whom was one of our own men, Master Sergeant Eloy Rodriguez, son of Eloy and Marlene Rodriguez, and father of sons Dustin and Derrick and daughter, Deanna, who received the Purple Heart and Legion of Honor Medals; and and all others who brought about a suspension of hostilities on Wednesday, February 27, 1991 (Midnight); and WHEREAS, Key West also produced other heroes, a local soldier, Gregory Bateham, who was recommended for the BRONZE STAR, after participating in a daring rescue of injured comrades; and WHEREAS, Navy pilot Lt. Robert Wetzel, with immediate family in Key West, was downed by the Iraquis, made a prisoner of war, and later released to United States officials; and WHEREAS, our quarrel was NOT with the people of Iraq, but with their leader, Saddam Hussain; and WHEREAS, President Bush, the Americans, and our Allies had the determination to drive the Iraquis out of Kuwait; and WHEREAS, it is now the time to put this war behind us, and go forward to improve things at home in the United States of America; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board hereby expresses its deep appreciation to and pride in President George Bush, Secretary of State James Baker, military strategists, the troops, especially those who died for us, among whom was one of our own men, Master Sergeant Eloy Rodriguez, local soldier Gregory Bateham, Lt. Robert Wetzel, and all others who had a part in the suspension of hostilities on Wednesday, February 27, 1991 (f1idnight), which our President has said, "A victory for all mankindl"; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board hereby recognizes the importance of now focusing on improving things at home by giving the best that is in all of us to the United States of America; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to forward copies of this Resolution to President George Bush, Secretary of State James Baker, the family of Eloy Rodriguez, Gregory Bateham and Lt. Robert Wetzel. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 13th day of March , A.D. 1991.
