WHEREAS,
law enforcement officers steadfastly provide an extraordinary level of
service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, under often-difficult and
dangerous circumstances; and
WHEREAS,
law enforcement officers and their loved ones must live with the possibility
of life-threatening violence every day they are on the job; and
WHEREAS,
as a consequence of this danger many law enforcement officers have made
the supreme sacrifice for their communities; and
WHEREAS,
hundreds of courageous public safety officers lost their lives in the tragedies
of September 11,2001; and
WHEREAS,
law enforcement officers and grateful citizens pause every year to honor the
memory of these officers.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dixie M. Spehar, Mayor of Monroe County, do

hereby declare May 8 through 13th, 2005, as
LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL WEEK
in Monroe County. I urge all County citizens, residents and visitors,
especially those in the "Southernmost City of the Continental United States,"
to remember those law enforcement officers who fell holding the thin, blue
line that stands between us and lives of fear and anarchy, and to attend the
Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony Friday, May 13, at 6 p.m. at Bayview
Park, Key West.
