Narrative Description of Project: The project is located in the Atlantic Ocean in Township 68 South, Range 25 East, Key West, Monroe County, Florida. The project includes the renourishment of 3,000 linear feet of shoreline at Smathers Beach to its 1960 configuration. Required mitigation for this renourishment includes: 1. Creating openings in White Street Pier barrier and realign shoreline on adjacent sides of the pier. 2. The purchase and dedication in perpetuity to conservation of Salt Ponds adjacent to Smathers Beach. 3. A project to clean-up Riviera Canal to assist the flushing action of the above Salt Ponds. 4. A program to monitor the regeneration of sea grasses in the vicinity of the renourished Smathers Beach and an opened White Street Pier. The 1\rmy Corps of Engineers is currently preparing a Design Memorandum (DM) for the beach renourishment portion of the project. The County is negotiating with the state regulatory agencies concerning the exact parameters of required mitigation. Finalization of these two activities, expected by late summer, will provide more definitive description and cost estimates for the project.
