in June of 1980, a group of local concerned Christians who shared a
vision of creating a church that would welcome all people, affirm the
diversity of God's creation, celebrate love in its many forms, and
minister to the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of residents and
visitors, came together to establish Metropolitan Community Church
Key West They are a member of the Universal Fellowship of
Metropolitan Community Churches which was founded in 1968 and is an
international religious organization comprised of more than 300 churches
and over 40,000 members in 18 countries; and
MCC Key West, having worshiped in the Key West Women's Club and
other various locations, purchased and remodeled a permanent home for
its growing ministries on Petronia Street with a sanctuary and fellowship
hall which was dedicated on April 26, 1987; and
After 17 years of ministry, MCC Key West launched its "Silver
Anniversary Capital Campaign" in 2004 to provide $250,000 in capital
improvements to its church home in order to continue (md expand its
ministries to residents and visitors; and
MCC Key West and its diverse membership continue to demonstrate
responsibility, reconciliation, and leadership in the spiritual, sociaL
business and politieallife of the community; and
MCC Key West has taken an active leadership role in addressing many
social concerns including: Providing food for low,income families,
homebound senior citizens, and homeless individuals, Giving assistance
for prescriptions, rent, utilities, and medical emergencies, Providing
physical, emotional, and spiritual assistance for persons living with
HIV! AIDS, their friends and family members, and Providing memorial
services, weddings, and holy unions in celebration of the lives and loves
of diverse residents and visitors; and
the Congregation of MCC Key West and its senior minister, the Rev.
Geoff D. Leonard-Robinson, will be joined by the Rev. Dr. Troy Pen'y,
founder of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community
Churches, June 10th through the 13th, 2005, as they begin a year of
celebration in observance of their twenty-fifth anniversary.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Dixie M. Spehar, do hereby proclaim June 2005 as
METROPOLIT AN COMMUNITY CHURCH KEY WEST MONTH
in Monroe County and call upon all citizens, residents and visitors, especially those in the
"Southernmost City of the Continental United States," to join in celebration and support of MCC
Key West and the invaluable contributions its members have made and will continue to make to
the betterment of life and strengthening of the community in which we live.
