A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA REQUESTING
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO BAN THE MANUFACTURE
AND EXPORT OF DANGEROUS PESTICIDES AND CHEMICALS.
WHEREAS, the Florida Keys has the only living barrier coral
reef; and
WHEREAS, to protect the coral reef the entire Keys has been
designated as a national marine sanctuary; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Keys' economy depends on the tourism
industry and the commercial fishing business; and
WHEREAS, pesticides such as DDT, heptachlor and
chlordane have been banned in the United States since the early
1970's; and
WHEREAS, pesticides have been found at the Florida Keys'
coral reef; and
WHEREAS, the federal government has no mandatory inspection
of seafood; and
WHEREAS, pesticides have been found in Florida Keys seafood
and it is still unknown what effects this may have on human
consumption; and
WHEREAS, it is suspected that the pollution is coming from
other countries; and
WHEREAS, these pesticides are suspected to have been made in
America and exported to other countries, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA,
That the Board does hereby request the Federal Government to
end the exportation of dangerous chemicals to foreign countries
especially those which are banned in the United States.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
