RESOLUTION NO. 222 -1991

A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE KEY WEST ART
AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO OBTAIN STATE PURCHASE OF THE
CUSTOMS HOUSE; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Customs House located on Mallory Square was
constructed in 1891 for use by the U. S. Postal Service, the
Customs Service, the U.S. Federal Court and the U.S. Lighthouse
Service; and
WHEREAS, this structure is one of the finest examples of
Romanesque Revival architecture in the State of Florida and one
of the most architecturally significant buildings in the region;
and
WHEREAS, the property is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places; and
l-JHEREAS, the property is currently for sale, and the Key
West Art and Historical Society has submitted a proposal to the
State of Florida Department of Land Acquisition for state
purchase; and
WHEREAS, the Customs House should be preserved for public
use by all citizens and visitors; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. Monroe County hereby supports the efforts of the Key
West Art and Historical Society to obtain State purchase of the
Customs House.
2. This Resolution shall go into effect immediately upon
its passage and adoption and authentication by the signatures of
the presiding officer and the Clerk of the Commission.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the 26th.... day of June , 1991.
