WHEREAS, the State of Florida Department of Trans-
portation has jurisdiction regarding the regulating of
vehicular traffic on U. S. 1/SR5 in Monroe County, and
WHEREAS, the U.S. 1/SR5 corridor includes long and
narrow bridges, and is predominately a two lane roadway
having no alternate routes for truck traffic and almost no
areas to turn around, and
WHEREAS, it requires additional time for vehicles to
pass tandem tractor trailers on two lane roadway increasing
the hazard inherent with passing, and
WHEREAS, accidents on U.S. 1 tend to be severe
requiring the complete closure of the roadway and result in
long delays to the motoring public, and
WHEREAS, tandem tractor trailers will add congestion
to the roadway, and may reduce operating speeds on U.S.1
which may affect the level of service, and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners is desirous
of improving safety conditions on U.S. Highway 1/SR5 in
Monroe County, now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. That the Mayor of Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, is authorized to request the
Florida Department of Transportation to prohibit tandem
tractor trailers on U.S.1/SR5 in Monroe County.
2. That the Clerk of said Board is hereby directed to
forward a certified copy of the Resolution to the State of
Florida Department of Transportation for consideration and
action.
