A RESOLUClON OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY IN
RECOqNI'tJON OF THE LATE JOSEPH B. ALLEN. JIl
WHEREAS, community leader Joseph B. Allen Jr. passed away on February 12,
2006, at the age of 91; and
WIIEREAS, Joseph B. Allen Jr. was born in Key West and graduated from Key West
High School a year earlier than his classmates in order to work at the Key West Citizen to
help his parents during the Great Depression, and eventually worked his way to Business
Manager of the newspaper; and
WHEREAS, Joseph B. Allen Jr., better known as Joe Allen, joined the Navy in 1941
and served in the Pacific during World War II, married his wife Marjorie in 1946 and, with
her, began a famiJy in Key West, where he won his first election, as a County Commissioner
in 1948; and
WHEREAS, Joe Allen served as Monroe County Commissioner until 1958, when he
was elected as the Monroe County Tax Assessor (now called the Property Appraiser), an
office which he tilled until 1972, when he decided to run for the State House of
Representatives: and
WHEREAS, 10e Allen was elected as Representative in 1976 and served in that office
until 1986; and
WIIEREAS, Joe Allen was a charter member of the Lions aub, serving as president
several terms, a founder of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church which eventually merged with
St. Paul's, a member of the Old Island Restoration Foundation, . a 3300 degree mason, and
also served as chairman and as a director on the board of directors of F"ust State Bank; and
WHEREAs, Joe Allen was a great historian and almost single-handedly saved West
Martello Tower from demolition and bought and restored a dilapidated home long before such
restoration became popular; and
WHEREAs, Joe Allen was a man who served the public with passion and dedication,
and was greatly loved by the members of this community; and
WHEREAS, Joseph B. Allen, Jr. is survived by his wife Marjorie, children Joe, BiU, John,
and Henry, grandchildren Brian, Holladay, Hank, Julie, Katie, Chrissy, and Lexi, and one
great grandchild Sara; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA:

Section 1: Hereby adopts this Resolution as an expression to the family of their
deepest sympathy in the passing of the late Joseph B. Allen, Jr. and in great appreciation of
the service he gave to his community.
Section 2: FOlWards a copy of this Resolution to the family of Joseph B. Allen, Jr.
expressing the Board's sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Couoty Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a
meeting of said Board held on the llID day of February. AD., 2006.
