Dear Mr. Roberts:
As you know, Ms. Stephanie Walters is resigning as director of the Monroe County
Health Department although she has gracioUsly agreed to stay through mid-October if
needed. County health departments represent a contractual partnership between
Florida's Department of Health and county government. They offer unique advantages
to allow joint funding and operation of programs that are tailored to the individual needs
of a county. Because of our desire to maintain this partnership, and also as a
requirement of state law, we seek to partner with county government when selecting a
new health department director.
The normal process is for both the state and the county to assign an equal number of
representatives to a selection committee and we have found two or three appointees
from each party provides for a group of manageable size. Secretary Brooks has asked
Representative Ken Sorensen and me to represent him in this process and we invite
you to appoint two or three representatives. If you select three representatives, the
Department of Health will appoint a third individual to balance the committee.
The selection committee will review applicants and conduct interviews as needed. This
process continues until a consensus is reached and an applicant is selected. That
applicant is then approved by f9rmal resolution of the Board of County Commissioners
and appointed by the Secretary of Health. I am hopeful we can have a new director in
place within the next four months.
The Department has several similar vacancies and has a national advertising campaign
for new directors that we will augment with local advertising. It would assist us in
advertising if you could provide direction from the Commis . .
qualifications they believe are most important for Monroe unty's ~00ii\fi1D
department director.
