Resolution 083-2002 COMMISSIONER MURRAY E. NELSON RESOLUTION NO. 083 -2002 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY IN RECOGNITION OF THE LATE LOIS BIGGER WHEREAS, Lois Bigger passed away at the age of 54 on December 29,2001; and WHEREAS, Lois Bigger was born in Bloomington, Indiana and grew up in the Sarasota area. She graduated from Southeastern High School and earned an associate degree from Manatee Junior College. She moved with her family to the Florida Keys in 1984 and earned a bachelor's of science degree from Florida Atlantic University; and WHEREAS, Lois Bigger was the Coral Shores High School college assistance guidance counselor in Tavernier for the past decade and was renowned for finding scholarship money for students, and putting them in touch with college admissions staff. She was known to the Upper Keys high school students as "sky counselor." In October, she flew with private pilot and friend, Glen Thompson, to hand-deliver 88 applications from hopeful Coral Shores students to college campuses around the state, and many students were accepted on the spot; and WHEREAS, one of Lois' children said she was still a child in spirit. That may be one reason why she was so loved by the students she helped along the way. She was a woman of boundless energy, and in her own gentle way demanded that her students reach for the stars and fulfill their greatest potential. The love she had for her family, her students and life itself was manifest in her actions; and WHEREAS, Lois Bigger, along with some of her students, as part of a cultural exchange went to Azerbaijan, the first country to break away from the Soviet Union. While there they visited refugee camps and interviewed people about the refugee crisis. It was recorded with the promise they would show the world their plight. One of Lois' students will carry on the project; and WHEREAS, Lois was involved in many local and Humanitarian projects, none more important to her than her children, both at home and at Coral Shores. She was a lifelong Girl Scout, active in Model United Nations, Students Against Tobacco, Drug Free Home Program, Civil Air Patrol, DARE, SWAT, Challenge Day, La Tigra, and a host of other worthwhile projects; and WHEREAS, Lois was one of those people whose life ended way too soon, but whose legacy of love and good deeds in her community will last for generations. She grabbed for all the gusto, and lived a life to be admired for its fullness and emulated for its compassion and love; and WHEREAS, Lois leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved husband, Charles Bigger; daughters, Jade Green and Ellen Bigger; her son Tearlach Bigger; her sister Debbie Emory; three brothers, Dewey Boggs, John Boggs and Timothy Boggs, and a legion offriends and admirers in the Florida Keys, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: Section 1: The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as an expression to the family of their deepest sympathy in the passing of the late Lois Bigger. Section 2: Commissioner Murray E, Nelson forwards a copy of this Resolution to her beloved family expressing the Board's sorrow.
