WHEREAS, the unique island chain of the Florida Keys faces extraordinary
challenges in its economy, environment, human services, government infrastructure, cost of
living and other areas; and
WHEREAS, the rapidly changing needs and concerns of the Florida Keys make it
necessary for many organizations, from volunteer groups to elected bodies, to address the
individual challenges in our community; and
WHEREAS, these organizations need dedicated citizens to guide them and build
consensus so that they may face our difficult public challenges in a collaborative manner;
and
WHEREAS, it is every citizen's duty to contribute in some manner to the community
in which they live;
NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe
County, Florida, I, CHARLES 'SONNY' MCCOY, do proclaim the Month of July 2002 to be
CIVIC LEADERSHIP MONTH
and urge all dedicated citizens to volunteer for community service and seek out leadership
opportunities.
