RESOLUTION NO. 259 -2002
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA,
COMMITTING OUR FULL SUPPORT TO THE JEWISH
COMMUNITY AND THEIR EFFORTS TO RESTORE
THEIR PLACE OF WORSHIP AND LEARNING.
WHEREAS, Monroe County has been the home of Congregation B'nai Zion, the oldest
Jewish congregation in South Florida, having been in continuous operation since 1887; and
WHEREAS, an arsonist seriously gutted the B'nai Zion Synagogue at 750 United Street,
Key West, Florida, in the early morning hours of April 16, 2002; and
WHEREAS, members of the Jewish faith have been our friends and contributing
members of the Keys, our economy and our culture for more than one hundred and fifty years;
and
WHEREAS, the action of this arsonist is a violation of everything that we, as a nation
and a society, hold as basic to our humanity,
NOW THEREFORE, the people of the Florida Keys, by and through their Board of
County Commissioners, hereby condemn the actions of these terrorists and declare ourselves to
be in unity with and in full support of our Jewish community and friends in their efforts to
restore their place of worship and learning. :t ~
